The unique beauty of Kos with the imposing castles, tall palm trees, endless coasts, traditional settlements and cosmopolitan atmosphere justify the description of “blissful island” given to this land thousands years ago by the Ancient Greeks. A valuable mosaic of monuments from the ancient history, the Venetian influence, Italian Art Deco and many more.

According to the myth Hercules was found castaway in Kos with some of his parties. Eurypylos, the King of the island believed Hercules was a thief and chased him. However Hercules defeated him and placed Chalkonas as the King of Kos, Nisyros, Kalymnos and other neighboring islands. Later, as the remnants of great temples reveal, Hercules was worshipped by the locals.

Wander to the walkways and discover the entire archaeological treasure between the modern and contemporary buildings. Visit the Castle of Nerantzia that was built by the Knights of St. John. The castle is a star shaped building with the coat of arms of the Gran Master at its entrance. It is connected with the city through a Bridge located over Phoinikon Street. When you cross the bridge you will reach the Hippocrates Plane Tree, a centenarian plane tree which is deemed to be planted by Hippocrates, about 2.400 years ago. Enjoy the tree’s shade, ignore the banisters holding it and consider its history. Continue your walk to the city with a visit to the Ancient Agora, built in the 4th century b.C. This monument is one of the biggest markets discovered in Greece.

The view of the beautiful tropical palm trees existing along with the antiquities comprises a beautiful image, at the heart of the contemporary island of Kos.
